Fable 3 ? Is It Another Classic In The Making?

By all accounts, the launch of Fable 3 is going to be a much awaited affair. Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios has been busy building up a buzz about this video game and given the warm reception accorded to Fables 1 & 2, he seems to be right on target. The plan seems to be to release it in episodes. The first episode is to be distributed free of cost towards the end of 2010, with the player having the option of buying the rest of the game or just every additional episode.

Fable 3 is a true sequel to the previous games in that it carries the epic adventure forward while having some very distinct characteristics of its own. While the previous games were set in medieval times, Fable 3 is set during the time of the Industrial Revolution.

You are a teenager born to a lowly family and have to overthrow the despotic ruler in order to become the king or queen yourself. You have to make this happen by leading an army of rebels that you build up by using your interpersonal skills. While most games would have this as the finish point, in Fable 3 you are only halfway done. For the rest of the game you have to see how you can fulfill the expectations of the rebellious mob you had led and of your subjects who expect you to bring about change.

What really makes Fable 3 stand apart from other games is the way a player can interact with other non-playable characters. The NPCs add a lot of texture to the game and increase your experience. This game also launches two new systems called ‘Expression Touch’ and ‘Dynamic Touch’ that enable you to better demonstrate your feelings.

Another thing that distinguishes Fable 3 from the others is its leveling system. Your ‘level’ in the game is indicated by your weapon. For example, the more you fight with your sword, the longer it gets. Amazingly, it even changes color depending on whether you use it for good or for evil.

The makers of this game have tried to maintain continuity from the previous games by allowing you to migrate your savegames from Fable 2 to Fable 3.

There is talk that Fable 3 uses Natal. This game seems to have all the makings of a classic, and Lionhead studios seem to have another winner on their hands.
